The micro univers of a house, especially in the case of the apartment in the block, are more alive due to the presence of pets, but also plants. For their appearance, the plants improve the appearance of the house, but did you know that some plants of apartments are toxic to dogs and dogs?
For this reason, veterinary doctors and owners of small animals can face unwanted intoxication due to the ingestion of plants of apartments, some of which with a toxic potential.
During the anamnesis, with the support of the owners, the veterinarian should find out which plant it is possible that the animal was ingested and if known as toxic.
Phytotoxins are produced secondary to the metabolism of plants without an essential role in their growth or reproduction. In the evolution of plants, phytotoxins appeared as a mechanism adjuvant for their survival. The most important vegetable toxins are represented by alkaloids, glycosides, bones, tossoalbumine and tannin.
Felines, our tortuous friends are attracted to plants that seem grass. This is due to their natural instinct that causes these plants to ground in the desire to eliminate the hair ingested during the bathroom. Clinical signs may vary from hypersalivation to serious gastrointestinal disorders, vomiting, lethargy, nerve or insufficient kidney disorders.
Currently, the list of toxic plants for cats includes over 700 different species. The probability that one of them is in our homes is quite large.
When we notice a change in the condition of our pet and discover that it has eaten a potential toxic plant it should be urgently going to the veterinary office. Call and notify your doctor what happened and how long you get.
Symptoms of plant poisoning
The main clinical signs encountered in the poisoning produced by the ingestion of ornamental plants are: the lack of appetite (inadequacy), are not like playful (apathy, lethargy), are withdrawn, which may have manifested nerve disorders manifested for hypersalivity, Mydrasi (dilation of the pupil) or epileptiform and diaryphage seizures. The evolution of the empire of the plants is overwhelmed, very accelerated and this is why the doctor’s visit becomes an emergency.
Treatment for plant poisoning
The patient must be subjected to in -depth advice. Blood champions will be taken (for a biochemical and hematological exam) and urine champions for a complete urinary examination (synthesis and urinary sediment).
The treatment is complex, represented by substances to induce vomiting for the elimination of the toxic medicinal coal ingested and activated for the absorption of toxic to the body and an infusion treatment consisting of solutions with electrolytes and vitamins to support the large vital functions. If there is an antidote for the plant, the veterinarian administers it.
My tips for you are:
- Try not to leave your friends unattended in a room with plants they can reach;
- Try to inform yourself before buying plants, regardless of whether they are toxic to animals, because there are toxic species for dogs, toxic species for cats;
- For felines in particular, to remove the hair from the stomach deriving from the toilet, there is the «cat grass» that you can meet in profiles and beyond. This is even suitable for cats because it eliminates Trichobezoors (crowds of hair) formed over time more easily;
- If you suspect that the animal has made it snorted from the plants that urgently arrive at the veterinary office and try to bring a leaf/ flower so you can identify the species of plants. Antidotes are different depending on the species of the plant;
I tried to systematize most of the toxic plants usually encountered for you to protect your quadruple friends.
