What should you know before adopting a dog? Essential suggestions of Dr. Cristian Cristea, Pet Stuff Veterinary Hospital

Do you want to adopt a puppy? To help you with a series of suggestions, I spoke Dr. Cristian Cristea, owner and co -founder at Pet Stuff Veterinary Hospital in Bucharest On the most important things you need to take into consideration to make a responsible adoption.

What should we know before adopting a puppy?

Dr. Cristian Cristea: «The adoption of a pet implies a long -term commitment, both for those who want their animal and for their family. First of all, I consider an essential for a serious lifestyle to determine the level of involvement that we are willing to give to a pet. It is important to make sure that we are informed about the time in which it is necessary to devote yourself to a quadruple. We have

What should we consider when we decide to adopt a puppy?

Dr. Cristian Cristea: «It is important to think simultaneously of the needs of the dog and our lifestyle. For example, large dogs need more space and exercise or longer walks, while small dogs can be more suitable for apartments.

Also, some breeds, like Border Collies, Huskies, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, and Jack Russell Terriers, are more energetic, while others like Bichon Frises, Shih Tzus, and English Bulldogs are much calmer.

I suggest that those looking to adopt should gather information about different dog breeds or seek advice from a vet or suggestions from people who already have experience with dogs.

At the same time, it is essential to think about the dog’s needs when it comes to proper nutrition. This varies based on age, breed, and lifestyle. Thus, we can be realistic about the expenses involved with a new family member.

Lastly, the needs of a pet must include regular vet visits. These should not only happen in emergencies, but a routine check-up is needed, especially for internal and external deworming and regular health checks. Being the most advanced veterinary hospital in Romania for pets, we often handle many emergency cases that could have been easily prevented through regular check-ups. Unfortunately, the main reason for not following these preventive measures is the lack of financial means that many pet owners face.

Where is the safest place to adopt a dog?

Dr. Cristian Cristea: «From my perspective, the safest places for adopting a pet are organized facilities, like shelters, charities, or NGOs focused on rescuing stray animals. These places are regulated and ensure that the animals receive necessary medical care. Their medical history is available for anyone.

Of course, there are times when you might want to adopt directly from individuals, but in such situations, we must check certain aspects before proceeding with the adoption.»

What should you check when adopting a dog:

Health status: You need proof that the animal has been examined by a veterinarian, vaccinated, and sterilized, along with a medical history.

Temperament and behavior: It is crucial to observe the surroundings where the animal has been kept and whether it shows aggressive or challenging behavior, which may need training.

Breed: If you wish to adopt a specific breed, it is vital to ensure the choice is correct and that you are not falling for a scam. The first step is to verify the dog’s certification, especially when discussing purity. Asking for a birth certificate or pedigree is crucial to confirm that the animal comes from a genuine lineage.
Dr. Cristian Cristea: «I would also suggest having a prior conversation with the person providing adoption, whether it’s a breeder or an individual. It’s important to ask key questions to make sure the animal comes from a good environment and that there are no hidden motives. We can request details about the dog’s parents. The mother has more than one litter each year.

Care and adjustment of the dog in his new home

Dr. Cristian Cristea: «The first thing I suggest, both as a vet and as a pet owner, is that the new family member should have a visit to the veterinarian in the first days. This not only allows us to check the overall health of the dog, but it is the perfect moment to set up a long-term care plan including vaccinations, deworming, and other preventive measures.

For a pet that has been adopted, going to the vet can be a tough experience, so it is crucial to ensure that it is handled gently and calmly by a responsible team of doctors. This can help lower the stress caused by vet visits.

Create a safe and cozy space

When the pet comes home for the first time, it is important to provide a stable spot, which should not change every day, so the pet can adjust to its new surroundings. It is also vital that the pet’s area is quiet, away from loud noises or busy activities, allowing it to retreat when needing rest and always feel secure.

Set up a routine

Besides lowering their stress, dogs thrive on routines, which make it easier for them to settle into the new home. Setting specific times for meals, play, and walks is essential to ensure they get enough physical and mental exercise. This will help the dog feel more secure and understand what is expected.

Socialization and trust

Spend lots of time with the pet on the first day, giving it attention and care, then gradually introduce it to other family members and take it for daily walks to interact with its surroundings and other pets.

Training and education

Dogs pick up new things quickly but need consistency. Begin with simple commands (like “sit,” “stay,” “come”) to help them grasp what is allowed and what earns rewards (like treats, play, or praise) when they do well. Stay away from physical punishment, as it can lead to anxiety and bad behaviors.

What advice can you give to those who want to adopt a dog?

Dr. Cristian Cristea: «Throughout my career, I have seen many cases of abandoned dogs for silly reasons, such as looks, age, or various health problems. Thus, the first piece of advice I would give to anyone looking to adopt a dog is to approach it with an open heart and a long-term perspective.

I always emphasize that prevention is key, which is why I advise those adopting a dog to never overlook early signs of possible health issues (like loss of appetite, frequent urination, or vomiting) or behavior concerns (such as aggression, fearfulness, or anxiety), and to consult a vet.

Lastly, we cannot overlook the situations where new owners feel overwhelmed by the demands of having a dog. In these cases, I suggest that those who realize they are not able to care for a dog should act with empathy towards the pet and take steps for a responsible adoption process to ensure the animal finds a loving and dependable home.»
The start of a fresh life with a rescued dog can be a great experience, but it is important to be ready to offer care and love to help them adjust. A secure setting, proper food, ongoing training, and regular check-ups with your vet are crucial for your furry friend to become a joyful and healthy part of your family.
