Beagle, an energetic, cheerful and sociable dog

One of the most popular and loved dog breeds is the Beagle. With large eyes and floppy ears, many people choose them as pets. Like various other dog breeds, in earlier times, Beagles had a completely different purpose as pets. Bred to assist in hunting, the breed’s origin is somewhat unclear.

There is a belief that the first Beagle was used for hunting in ancient Greece, around the fifth century AD, where writings by Xenophon mentioned a dog similar in looks to the Beagle being used to hunt small animals.

As the Roman Empire grew, the breed started to spread mostly in areas now known as England. The name Beagle referred to all the small hounds used for hunting small animals, even though there were clear physical differences compared to today’s Beagle. In the 11th century, William the Conqueror brought hounds like Hubert and Talbot to England. Repeated breeding took place with other types of English hounds to enhance their speed, hunting stamina, and exceptional sense of smell.

Queen Elizabeth I developed a fondness for the Beagle breed. At that time, there were two smaller versions that ran. Pocket Beagle and Glove Beagle were tiny dogs that fit into a pocket or glove, respectively.

With a height of up to 23 cm, the dogs could be carried in a hunter’s pocket and accompany them on horseback. The larger hounds would chase the prey down, then the hunters would let the Beagle follow the scent through grass and bushes. Today, these smaller versions have vanished.

Basically, the breeds that helped create the modern Beagle include Talbot, Sudic hounds, Nordic breeds, and Harrier. During the breeding process, there was a focus on preserving an essential and highly important characteristic for the breed, which is their highly developed sense of smell.

Therefore, even today, Beagles are effectively used by police or customs authorities to sniff out drugs or illegal items. Being medium-sized dogs, they can easily fit into small or tight spaces inaccessible to larger dogs or humans. The Beagle Club was founded in 1890, and soon after, the breed standard was established.
Currently, based on information from the American Kennel Club, the Beagle breed ranks among the top 10 popular breeds in the world. Even though they are quite independent and training might come with some challenges (they are not bred to solely please their trainers like German shepherds or retrievers), they make wonderful pets, especially for families with kids.

The popularity of this breed has increased not just in England, but also across Europe and the United States, largely due to contributions from animated shows like Wallace and Gromit, the movie Shiloh, or the TV show Wonder Years. A well-known character from these cartoons is Snoopy, the most famous Beagle, who is the main character in the comic strip Peanuts. His popularity has led many families with children to desire a Snoopy of their own at home.

PERSONALITY

Originally raised to hunt alongside other dogs, the Beagle is a joyful, friendly, and outgoing dog that gets along well with other dogs. They are gentle around kids and can accept other pets in their space (like cats) if they have been socialized properly. It is rare for a Beagle to show aggression or violence, but it is important to ensure they are socialized with kids and other pets when they are young.

Due to the fact that it is an independent dog and can be very easily distracted by external stimuli, its training can be difficult. Like most hunting races, they were not raised to please the teacher, but rather to think independently. A specific feature of Beagle is stubbornness. They will completely ignore the masters in favor of their favorite activities, in particular they have followed a smell.

Similar to other hunting dogs, the beagle suffers from «selective hearing». Within the hunt, the selective hearing is essential and allows the dog to concentrate better on what he has to do, ignoring other noises. In everyday life, selective hearing manifests itself when the dog totally ignores the master’s calls and is focused on other activities.
