How do we protect our dog from cold and frost

With the arrival of winter the temperatures fall and sometimes this can be very unpleasant for our quadrupeds, whether they grew up at home or in the courtyard. So they need a little help from us. The needs of dogs in winter differ according to life, age, health, the place where it is raised, of the type of fur it has.

1) Based on the outside weather, plan your walking or play times. When it’s very cold, it’s better to take them for short but frequent walks.

2) After returning from your walk, dry their pads to remove salt and avoid slipping on the roads or sidewalks which may hurt our dogs’ pads. It’s better to apply lanolin or special products for their protection before going out. You can find these items at stores. If they fit, winter boots will also be helpful. This way, they won’t slip and will be safe from sharp stones hidden under the snow, ice, and other hazards.

3) Although not all dog owners agree, clothes can sometimes be very important. They are necessary for dogs with short fur, large breeds (like Dobermans and Boxers), as well as small dogs, puppies, old dogs, and those with health issues. So if it’s needed, feel free to use winter clothing. It’s best if winter clothes are waterproof or insulated. Avoid cotton as it absorbs water from snow and does more harm than good for your dogs.

4) Try to avoid walking your dogs in the morning and evening. Use the sunshine around midday or slightly warmer afternoon times. Mornings and evenings are the coldest, making walks less enjoyable for them.

5) In winter, we all know antifreeze is commonly used. Make sure to monitor what your dogs eat or lick off the ground. Avoid walking near cars.

6) Even in winter, dogs still need fresh water. If you can, take a bottle of warm water from home; it will cool down enough by the time your dog is thirsty. It’s better to use plastic or rubber bowls rather than metal. Metal bowls cool down water much faster. Make sure they drink as needed and refill with fresh water when necessary. Don’t leave water outside, as it will get too cold and could harm your dog.

7) Playing with a ball or Frisbee is better than slow walks. Active play helps dogs handle lower temperatures more easily, and it also prevents weight gain associated with the colder months.

8) The dog’s diet in winter should be somewhat different from other seasons. This mainly applies to dogs that are outside. Their food in winter should be richer in fat, and the portions should be slightly larger. Fish oil specially made for dogs is a great help.

9) Create a warm bed or provide a cushion or blanket for your dogs to rest. Even an empty floor can feel cold for them.
10) During the winter holiday time when Pcnitor/fireworks/firecrackers are used, it is the time of day when they are not often heard, so it is best to take the pets for a walk. During this time, never let the dog off the leash. It does not matter how well-behaved it is; upon hearing a loud noise, it might get scared and could run into traffic or get lost. On New Year’s Eve, you can help keep it calm by turning up the TV’s volume or giving it some treats, but be careful not to give too many treats because it may make them even more anxious. If you can, set up an indoor crate covered with a blanket where it can stay. Some dogs feel safer in a cozy spot. If you do not have a crate, you can create a safe area using some beds and chairs where it can hide.

2) The area where we sleep or where our dog can stay dry during rain, snow, or bad weather is very important. It is best to have a shelter that is insulated and placed in a spot out of the wind. The entrance of the shelter should not be too large; it must fit the dog so that it doesn’t become a big opening for the wind and cold. The shelter shouldn’t be directly on the ground. It should have a base that raises it slightly. The entrance should ideally have a flap to keep the wind out. Inside the shelter, there should be no old clothes, beds, or pillows. These items will likely get wet and harm the dog. Instead, use clean and dry straw, which stays warm, dries quickly, and can be replaced when needed. The shelter should not be significantly larger than the dog to retain its body heat. However, it shouldn’t be too small either, so the dog can fit comfortably.

3) As mentioned earlier, winter food should be increased in amount and have more fats, and for dogs that stay outside, it is best that they have at least one hot meal each day.

4) It is better that the dog is not tied up during winter. It needs to be able to move. Create a larger area with the shelter so the dog has space to roam. If you must tie it, ensure there’s enough room to move. If the space is too small, the dog won’t be able to move as needed and may get cold.

5) Make sure that the dog has access to fresh water at all times. It is best to use a plastic or rubber bowl and place it safely. Metal bowls cause the water to chill much faster. Change the water several times during the day. You can add a floating ball to the bowl to help prevent the water from freezing too quickly.

6) The dog’s coat needs to be brushed. This stops matting that can stick to ice and snow. Brushing the coat acts as a barrier against the cold. Do not shave dogs that stay outside in winter.
5) During the winter break, when there are computers everywhere, firecrackers, and fireworks, it’s important to take safety steps. We know that only a few dogs can handle the loud sounds, which is why during the holidays, there are many more cases of dogs going missing. Because of the loud noises, dogs get scared and try to run away. Sadly, some manage to get away. So if you can, during the holidays, take extra safety measures so the dog cannot escape from the yard. At night, especially on New Year’s, try to keep it in a safe area, like a room, garage, or barn. If you must leave it in the yard, ensure the fence is tall enough so it can’t jump over and keep it tied up with strong ropes so that it cannot break free.

So, even if at first sight in winter it seems like a tough job with so many precautions, in truth it is a favorite season for our dogs and a real joy for them to run in the snow. We just need to watch over a few things and the rest is covered.
