The «Get After Your Dog» initiative began with the aim to feel more at ease in our town, allowing our kids to play quietly on the grass and stroll along the smooth sidewalks. As we continue, we will also take a specific step to develop in Romania, which is to appeal to the common sense of the community, to provide them with accurate information, and to inspire them to help create a more child-friendly city with simple actions. This campaign targets pet owners who do not clean up after their dogs.
Besides being unpleasant, the animal waste left in parks or on sidewalks can be very harmful for unvaccinated and sick dogs, as pediatrician Ilinci Traulis mentions in the video below. Children should not be restricted from interacting with dogs, as there are numerous advantages to playing with and caring for animals. The video highlights the risks and hygiene guidelines concerning pets with irresponsible owners who do not pick up the waste or get them vaccinated or dewormed.
These common sense guidelines have also been confirmed by Dr. Cristian Cristea, a veterinarian at the animal clinic:

Keeping public spaces clean is a shared responsibility, and responsible dog ownership plays a vital role in creating healthier, safer, and more enjoyable communities for everyone. Campaigns such as «Get After Your Dog» serve as important reminders that simple daily actions can have a significant positive impact on the environment and on the quality of life of all residents. Picking up after your dog is not only a matter of courtesy—it is an essential practice that demonstrates respect for neighbors, public spaces, and the community as a whole.
Dog waste left on sidewalks, parks, playgrounds, and green areas is more than just an unpleasant sight. It can contain harmful bacteria, parasites, and other pathogens that may pose health risks to people and animals alike. Children who play in public parks, other pets using the same spaces, and maintenance workers are all affected when owners fail to clean up after their dogs. By carrying waste bags during every walk and disposing of them properly, pet owners help reduce these risks while contributing to cleaner neighborhoods.
Education and public awareness campaigns are effective because they encourage positive behavior rather than relying solely on penalties or enforcement. Promoting good habits through information, community involvement, and personal responsibility helps create a culture where cleaning up after pets becomes the accepted social norm. When more owners lead by example, others are encouraged to do the same, resulting in cleaner streets and public spaces for everyone to enjoy.
Responsible pet ownership extends beyond providing food, shelter, and veterinary care. It also includes respecting shared environments and understanding that every action reflects on the wider community of pet owners. Small acts of consideration, such as picking up dog waste, strengthen trust between pet owners and non-pet owners and make cities more welcoming for families, visitors, and animals alike.
Ultimately, building cleaner and friendlier communities does not require complicated solutions—it starts with individual responsibility. Every dog owner has the opportunity to contribute to a healthier environment through one simple habit practiced consistently. Campaigns like «Get After Your Dog» remind us that meaningful change often begins with everyday actions that, when multiplied across an entire community, produce lasting results. By choosing to clean up after our pets, we help create parks where children can play safely, sidewalks that everyone can enjoy comfortably, and neighborhoods that reflect pride, respect, and civic responsibility. Together, these small efforts create stronger communities and ensure that both people and their canine companions can share public spaces in a cleaner, safer, and more pleasant environment for years to come.
