The subject of cat relationships has gained more attention among animal researchers recently. Now, a new study from researchers in Italy adds to this extensive pool of information, portraying how dogs and cats coexist under one roof. The authors of the study, published in the Journal of Plos One, distributed questionnaires to 1270 residents in Italy who have both a cat and a dog (or multiple cats or dogs).

The findings largely align with past studies. Overall, pet owners view dogs and cats as sociable animals, though they can sometimes be neurotic.

The European research showed that 85% of dogs bond with their owners, compared to only 49% of cats. Additionally, cats often ignore dogs more than the other way around.

Pet owners noted that their dogs were friendlier than their cats towards familiar people: 96% of dogs, versus just 79% of cats, were sociable with family members. When it came to dogs of the same kind, 84% were friendly with familiar dogs and 36% were friendly with unfamiliar dogs. This is different for cats: only 49% were friendly with familiar cats and 10% friendly with unfamiliar cats.

Just over 64% of cats and dogs living together played together; 58% followed each other and 41% had fights. Almost two-thirds of pets sometimes «invade» each other’s space. And nearly 44% of cats occasionally played with the dog’s tail.

This research supports the common belief that dogs are usually more outgoing, while cats are more reserved. This might be due to the fact that dogs have been domesticated for a longer time than cats.
