Atopic dermatitis can be maintained in the fray and quadruped so as not to suffer

Not once I felt that dermatology is the most profitable specialization in veterinary medicine. Why? You won’t even escape skin diseases, so you will always be. 🙂 Of course, it’s not the devil so black but not immaculate.

Among the multiple dermatological conditions, today we will stop our attention on atopic dermatitis and because it is the most «ambiguous» among the dermatitis but also because we have fought for 6 years. We, the country, a Foxerrier.

The country and its attempts

The disease debuted at the age of 10 from the intense itching at the muzzle level. The itch can be present and/or the ears area, around the eyes, the belly, the legs, etc.
In the first phase that I consulted up to all veterinarians from listening and recommendations until I understood that there is only a specialized doctor can provide in -depth explanations on the disease that our quadruped is addressed and can also conceive a specific investigation and analysis plan.

Atopic dermatitis It is a hereditary disease, not transmitted to other animals or human, the disease that is characterized by the predisposition to develop allergies to certain environmental factors. Unfortunately, it is not healing, but with a certain rather complex treatment scheme it can be maintained in the area giving the opportunity to have a balanced life as close as possible to the normal one.

To be diagnosed with atopic dermatitis, the other dermatological conditions and beyond. Obviously, it is necessary to perform a series of complete blood tests followed by a series of dermatological tests to check if there are no other conditions such as the sarcoptic radius, the infections from malassezia, piodermititis, allergic dermatitis in the stings for the hands, mosquitoes, etc. They shouldn’t have escaped. Once these conditions are eliminated, it should be taken into consideration that it could be a food intrarance, a high sensitivity for some foods. For this there will be 1 or two exclusion diets with specially designed food for this. The exclusion diet should be made for at least 2 months, which means that 2 months the dog will eat only that food. Without the slightest exception.

Unfortunately, no improvements have been observed in us from the exclusion diets.

If during the 2 months we observe the cessation or improvement of itching we can consider that it is a food hypersensitivity and in this case you can establish an adequate diet with the vet.

If it has shown that the exclusion diet did not have the expected effect, do not miss, let’s move on to the next step.
Since other dermatological disorders have been removed from the discussion, as well as food hypersensitivity, after we ensure that the deworms have been performed correctly, we can resort to an intradermal test after which we can find out what the allergens that trigger the itching, the influence, the obsessive lick are. They can be: trees, herbs, infesting pollen, mushrooms, internal environmental allergens, epithele, insects, allergens by inhaler, etc.
After the test we will be able to find out what our quadruped is allergic and, depending on this, the veterinarian can make us a long -term desensitization treatment scheme.
With a little luck it can be shown that the allergies are only seasonal or if we are less fortunate, allergies can occur throughout the year.
If the final diagnosis is an atopic dermatitis, we must consider the removal of the animal with the allergens possible. Whether it is a more rigorous hygiene of the house, avoiding the rugs possible, removing the dust more frequently than usual, removing the mold, excessive humidity in the room, avoiding textile toys, avoiding the exposure of the external animal in areas with high vegetation. All this is done according to the result of the intradermal test.

Depending on the severity of the symptoms, the veterinary dermatologist will choose the appropriate treatment, whether it is a desensitization treatment or that it is immunomodator, antihistamine, glucocorticoid, etc.

Conclusions: Atopic dermatitis as I said cannot be healed but can be maintained in a treatment with a treatment scheme made by a veterinary dermatologist.

This means:

1. Pharmacological treatment. Fortunately, veterinary medicine has progressed a lot in recent years, therefore the treatment with immunomodulators has gained soil in the face of the treatment of glucocorticoids which, although it has proven effective, is good, has multiple side effects.

2. The corresponding hygiene of the animal and the place where it lives:

* Allerderm Spot on contributes to the restoration of the function of the protective barrier of the epidermis and therefore promotes its hydration, decreases its sensitivity and strengthens its protective role.

* Megaderm – Diet supplement with essential fatty acids, which helps to restore the integrity of the skin and improve the quality of the fur in dogs and cats.
